Sean and I met while working as backup dancers for a gig two years ago.  He is a dope dancer and I remember cracking up with him on set because he was so funny and down to earth!  What makes it even better is that we're from the same hood!

Tell us about yourself

Hey, my name is Sean Mejia, I’m 30 years old, and I was born, raised and still reside in the Bronx.  I am a professional dancer, and I’ve been pursuing it for maybe about 4-5 yrs. now.  I love what I do, although it could get a little stressful, but its worth it in the end.  I have a really weird sense of humor, some get it, some don’t, but I don’t care majority of the time because I get a kick out of it.

What are your fondest memories of growing up in the Bronx?

Some of my fondest memories of growing up in the Bronx, is riding the train by myself, and showing up late to everything or getting lost in a bunch of neighborhoods I’ve never heard of.  It was a struggle.

Do you feel as though being from the Bronx has heavily influenced who you are today?

I would have to say yes.  I grew up in a community based neighborhood, everyone knows everyone, and if they don’t know you, they know someone that KNEW you.  But once I stepped out of my own community, I was introduced to so much more.  More cultures, more people.  I also feel as though my attitude comes from the Bronx.  The idea of never letting someone play you will be inside of me because of the Bronx.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

One of my biggest inspirations is Bob Fosse, he was a fantastic triple threat that paved the way for awkward movement to be a thing. Another is Jim Carrey, growing up, I’d watch “In Living Color” with my family, and he was always so daring and versatile as an actor, especially when he got older, and I always loved that.

What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?

I’m not sure. I have little things I conquer, but there is so much more.

If you could, in what ways would you give back to your community?

I would create a safe studio space for people to just dance, and chill. I don’t think Parkchester has that, unless it's hidden somewhere and I wasn’t invited.  LOL

If someone were visiting the Bronx, where would you tell them to go?

I would tell them to go to all of the landmarks of the Bronx, Botanical Gardens, the Hip Hop Museum, Yankee Stadium. The generic places, they don’t need to know about the cool spots.
