Meet: Abel

June 6, 2018

Name: Abel Nieves

Age: 28

Profession: Paraprofessional

What Area of the BX are you from?:

Mosholu Parkway/ Bedford Park Blvd

current Location: Morris Park

Abel and I met as students at LaGuardia High School.  Although he was a vocal major and I was a dance major and we didn't have any classes together (except for Gospel Choir senior year lol), we connected on the fact that we were two pretty cool kids from the Bronx.  Now, Abel is making a positive impact in the lives of youth!

Tell me about yourself:

I’m just a young educator taking life one day at a time.  Currently creating an atmosphere for my students that can help better prepare for the real world in due time.  I'm blessed and appreciative to still have everyone in my life and I've always felt that positivity can create wonders.

What are your fondest memories of growing up in the Bronx?

Summer days were iconic.  Skate Key was epic growing up and I always appreciated going to Yankee games as a kid. Festivals were poppin on the Grand Concourse.  Generally, everything was better back in the late 90s/ Early 2000s.

Do you feel as though being from the Bronx has heavily influenced who you are today?

Definitely without a doubt.  I learned how to fight in the Bronx, I learned how to love in the Bronx, I am who I am today mentally, spiritually, and even physically because of the Bronx.  It makes you more appreciative to grow up in an area where everyone enjoyed the little things in life.  The fondest moments of my life were spent here.

Who are your biggest inspirations?

My family, specifically my mother and brothers.  They are humble individuals who don’t complain and make the best out of life everyday.  They're always encouraging and supporting me no matter the circumstance.

What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?

Honestly, it would have to be graduating college in 2012 with a major and minor, but also getting employed into the DOE.  Having a career in education was also a moment in which I felt was a game changer for me.

If you could, in what ways would you give back to your community?

I would create events that gives monetary contributions to foundations or programs that help those in need whether it’s pertaining to the elderly, the sick, or even social justice programs to create a better environment in the community.

If someone were visiting the Bronx, where would you tell them to go?

Fordham Rd, with a Boston Red Sox Jersey on. LOL
