NAME: Gabrielle Salvatto
Profession: Professional ballet dancer
WHAT area OF THE BX ARE YOU FROM?: Arthur Ave/ Little Italy
CURRENT LOCATION: Salt Lake City, UT
Gabi and I met as dance majors while attending LaGuardia High School,
(A.K.A The FAME School). Ever since I've known her, she has always been a stunning dancer and I've always admired her for her dedication to her craft and down-to-earth personality! Her talents have taken her to perform on stages all over the world and on television!
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF:
Bronx born and raised. After elementary school, I did my schooling and training in The City, but always came home to the Bronx. I trained at P.S.24, Professional Performing Arts School, LaGuardia H.S. and Juilliard. I've been dancing for as long as I can remember. I'm loving company life at Ballet West, but my heart will always be in NYC.
WHAT ARE YOUR FONDEST MEMORIES GROWING UP IN THE BRONX?
Spending time at The Zoo and the Botanical Gardens, beach days at Orchard Beach and fish dinners on City Island. Having access to the best Italian food in NY right at my fingertips.
DO YOU FEEL AS THOUGH BEING FROM THE BRONX HAS HEAVILY INFLUENCED WHO YOU ARE TODAY?
Absolutely. The neighborhood, the culture, the diversity opened up my eyes to the world. Having street smarts and being able to adapt to my environment. A sense of family and community. I owe it all to the Bronx.
WHO ARE YOUR BIGGESt INSPIRATIONS?
Maya Angelou, Aesha Ash, all the bad@$$ women in my family.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT TO DATE?
Graduating from Juilliard and “making it” as a professional.
IF YOU COULD, IN WHAT WAYS WOULD YOU GIVE BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY?
If I had the money, build substantial housing, provide more funding to The Zoo so they can get their full out Holiday Lights back up and running and clean up the streets (literally clean up the trash). Share the gifts of art and dance; I do hope to do that one day.
IF SOMEONE WERE VISITING THE BRONX, WHERE WOULD YOU TELL THEM TO GO?
The Zoo and then down the street to Half Moon for the best piece of pizza.
